Hi, I'm Dave Weiner. Every Wednesday I do a new Riff Of The Week. Here's Season 3, Episode 15: "The Modes: Ionian"

Don't forget to view the tab and listen to the audio clips for this riff on the ROTW page of my site at: www.daveweiner.com/rotw,

You can find Hi-RES HD versions of this video at riffoftheweek.com or by subscribing (for free) to the ROTW podcast in ITunes (search Dave Weiner).

Want the "got riffs?™" shirt or hat? You can get it at www.riffoftheweek.com/store.

Interested in my music. My first cd "Shove The Sun Aside" is available at www.daveweiner.com/store

  • How do I know what mode my chord progression is?

  • @liamzuid - harmonizing a scale.

  • Are there no longer tabs for these lessons?

  • all tabs will be up at riffoftheweek . com eventually.

  • Harmonizing the scale is just finding out what chords you can form with e.g. C major notes: C D E F G A B?

  • yes.

  • Excellent

  • @RsGhost1 For pretty much any scale your chords are pretty much made of a 1,3 and a 5. You start on a note, go 2 up in the scale, then go up 2 again. Then you can colour it in by going up 2 more to a 7th or even get fancy pants with a 9th or even 11th. (Look at the notes in the tune to work out if its justified!) Starting this on any note in a scale will usually give you a valid chord, but not necessarily the right chord for the song. Use your ears.

  • Outside of a teacher I used to have that was in G.I.T, the others just looked at me funny when I asked about teaching modes. This told me their just older guys that never learned them/understand them

Frank Gambale's video years ago was a huge help too

  • Wow, you're a great player man and a good teacher

  • Well ive been out of the guitar world for about 2 years now and only been getting back into it, have to say your videos are amazing for refreshing things and teaching me where i was going wrong and also stuff i didnt even know.. thanks a bunch dave :)

  • Thanks much, explained very clearly:probably the best instruction manual for music I have seen on YouTube! However it would be nice if you could put fragments of your solos as a PDF which would help us to see which specific notes you were using. I know that would be a lot to ask but anyways thank you and I'm amazed your putting this up free!
