Here's one of my all-time favorite Christian folk song about the second coming of Christ. It was written in the early 19th century, and is from the Sacred Harp, 1844. It was written by John Leland, but the original version was not quite the same as this arrangement.

O, when shall I see Jesus and reign with Him above
And shall hear the trumpet sound in that morning?
And from the flowing fountain drink everlasting love,
And shall hear the trumpet sound in that morning.

O, shout, glory!
For I shall mount above the skies,
When I hear the trumpet sound in that morning.

Gird on the gospel armor of faith and hope and love,
And you'll hear the trumpet sound in that morning.
And when the combat's ended He'll carry you above,
And you'll hear the trumpet sound in that morning.

O, Shout, glory!....

Our ears shall hear with transport the host of heaven sing,
And shall hear the trumpet sound in that morning.
Our tongues shall chant the glories of our immortal King,
And shall hear the trumpet sound in that morning.

O, Shout, glory!...

  • @mrsnash1308 Thank you! To God be the glory! & blessings on you!

  • Many of the stanzas to this song are found in two shape-note songbooks. In both the 'Red" (Denson) and 'Blue' (Cooper) books the song is named "The Morning Trumpet" and appears on page 85 of each book. It attributes the lyrics to John Irleand (1793) and the tune to B.F.White (1844).

  • @grebnecher Very interesting! Thanks for the info!

  • Is this a old civil war soilder song?

  • It's actually about fifteen years or so older than that!
