DEEP WATER is the stunning true story of the first solo, non-stop, round-the-world boat race, and the psychological toll it took on its competitors. Sponsored by the Sunday Times of London, the much-ballyhooed event attracted a field of nine, including amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst, who set out to circumnavigate the globe in late 1968. Battling treacherous seas and his own demons, Crowhurst almost immediately comes apart as he faces the isolation of nine months on the high seas. Part adventure yarn and part metaphysical mystery, DEEP WATER is an unforgettable journey into one mans heart of darkness.

  • One of the most intriguing human dramas ever and not many people know about it.

This is before GPS and storable food stuff so we today can't begin to fathom the challenges faced by these men. Heart wrenching to watch Crowhurst's wife and children then and now telling the story. The one character who was most compelling for me though was Moitissier. I knew I had to find out more about this guy. A real salt and a poet and philosopher to be sure. He led an amazing life.

  • PS>>> Bernard Moitessier = most intresting man in the world

  • @seesnap It's exactly what I said having watched this.

  • There are 9 parts to this movie, well worth it all. What was going on in the world in 1968-69 besides Political War (Vietnam) and landing on the Moon.

  • @in2bronte

yeah, considering the mood against Crowhurst at the time, that one really is a jaw-dropper, thats some amazing grace alright

  • An amazing story and study on psychology ... I admire Robin Knox-Johnston's incredibly unselfish and generous act told in the credits. I would like to be able to thank him for that kindness. This documentary shows off the best of Youtube. Brilliant.

  • They should make a movie of this film, and Colin firth would be perfect as Donald crowhurst

  • Sir Robin Knox Johnston.....is why i sail.

  • @samstopndgo69ner Yeah In did an essay on this documentary not too long ago

  • @Blue67impala 'isolation can deteriorate ones psychology and state of mind.'

essay i did for english this year, good luck...if you havnt already done it..

  • @RusselBertrand I'll send it to you when I finish then, I decided to analyze and compare the sailing experience of Moitssier and crowhurst. Amazing voyage this was, cant imagine having to be isolated for so long like that.

  • @Blue67impala nice i would like to read it if possible...Bernard has published several books, I have own and am reading the "long way" which is a day to day diary of the race chronicled by this doc....all the other contestants wrote memoirs as well, and the piece de resitance is "voyage for madmen" enjoy it with a stiff drink beside a warm fire when a storm is a brewing outside...epic
