Wolverhampton Wanderers v Blackburn Rovers 1960 FA Cup Final

Having won the league the previous two seasons, Wolves had been pipped by a single point by Burnley as the 1959/60 season drew to a close, but with the FA Cup Final still to contest, silverware could still be added to an ever-growing trophy cabinet as Wembley beckoned.

Facing Blackburn Rovers who had finished the season in 17th in only their second season back in the first division, Wolves were hot favourites to clinch the cup for the fourth time in their history, and who would bet against them, as they eventually strolled to a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Their opening goal on 41 minutes can only be described as a gift from the Blackburn defence, as Stobarts cross was deflected past his own goal keeper by the unfortunate Blackburn defender Mick McGrath. If Wolves had been dealt the upper-hand with the goal, 2 minutes later Blackburns woes heightened as full-back Dave Whelan fractured his leg, and Rovers faced the prospect of playing the whole second half with only 10 men.

Midway through the second half Norman Deeley scored from Hornes cross to all but seal the victory for Wolves, and with 2 minutes to go, the icing was on the cake as Deeley hit his second to make it 3-0 after Stobart had nearly up-rooted the goal posts with a ferocious shot.

Bill Slater led the players up the famous Wembley steps, and the Cup was heading back to Molineux for a record 4th time. Now relive this golden moment of history all over again as we bring you the full uninterrupted 90 minutes, plus exclusive interviews withshot in September 2004.

  • @vimto89 i wouldn't exactly say they were like Man united mainly because Wolves never won much in the 60s however in the 1950s Wolves won the league in 53,57 and 58 but they were in the top 4 all through the 50s so they were a decent side, I guess you could say they were like how Everton were in the 80s but in the 50's lol.

  • yeah I think Wolves and Burnley were like manchester united and Liverpool back then so I was told and Sunderland 2

  • They were better and the mighty Burnley beat them

  • Back then I know I wore around but wolves were like Manchester United then
