what a great time I had, in the sixties, when I lived at 119 Domain Road an drove by tram every day in the city. I realy get homesick when I see those trams. Well long ago, when I lived in South Yarra as a German migrant. Now back in Germany I am longing for the old days in Australia. (pardon my mistakes)

When the trams cross a main road, do they have to wait for traffic or do they have a signal?

At many traffic signalled intersections they have their own special signals. AFAIK are never put in a position of having to 'give way' at uncontrolled intersections.
