You said it perfectly. Yes, John is covering this song, but it's so different from the original. If the lyrics were different I would've just thought it was a Lennon song.

What a great surprise! I thought I was in for an acoustic version of the song of the same name from "Rock 'n' Roll" and then I find this unreleased gem.
