Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles engaged with residents of Laton, California, a small farming community in the San Joaquin Valley, in a multidisciplinary art and design project. The San Joaquin Valleys social and economic factors are relevant to Los Angeles residents, reflecting as they do global trends in food production and farming, rural to urban migration, rural identity and the environment. Sponsored by the Ford Foundation, this project includes several Otis programs including O-TEAM (Otis Teens, Educators, Artists and Mentors), Integrated Learning undergraduates in design studio and ethnography, and the MFA Public Practice program. As lead artists, MFA students have worked with residents, cultural and community leaders to support the town growth through creative production. The project culminated in an evening event on March 21st entitled LATON LIVE! REUNION/REUNIÓN.
Funded in part by the Ford Foundation with Otis College of Art and Design.
