This 5-inch bore Fanning hot air engine water pump was patented by John Wickstrom in 1900 and manufactured by The Fanning Manufacturing Co. in Chicago from 1900 to 1903. While these unusual machines were more powerful and pumped more water than similar engines made by the Rider-Ericsson Engine Co., they were also more complex and probably more expensive. The Fanning brothers' company went out of business in 1903 when it appears likely they sold out to the Thomas & Smith Co. (also in Chicago) who sold and advertised similar engines from about 1905-15.
