After a chance encounter with CAF board president Jeffrey Essakow and his wife Jill on on a plane in South Africa, Luvo Sanqele's life was forever changed. After the learning about the bilateral above-knee amputee on the plane, Jill Essakow made contact with his wheelchair basketball coach and invited them both out to San Diego. On October 20, Luvo was fit at RGP for his first pair of hi-tech prosthetic legs courtesy of the Challenged Athletes Foundation. The next day he took his first steps, and wore his very first pair of Adidas shoes. It was more than a dream come true for the young man. The 19-year-old lost his legs when he was three years old after a tribal conflict . He and a neighbor child were left on a railroad track. The neighbor girl was killed. Luvo survived, but lost both legs above the knee. Since that time, he's worn wooden legs that prevented him from living up to his potential. Now thanks to the Challenged Athletes Foundation, he's more than a foot taller, and has been given hope of opportunities that he never knew were possible.
