I consider Adobe Photoshop Lightroom's Graduated filter to be a vital part of my image processing routines. Almost all of my landscape images are improved with graduated filters. I am delighted to announce that Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 Beta now gives us even more control when using this tool. The new Graduated Filter, and the new Adjustment Brush, use the Process Version 2012 controls which expand their ability to recover fringe highlight and shadow detail. We can also change the white balance of the affected area when using these tools and are able to add or reduce noise and moire.

In this video tutorial, I take an old favorite, an image that I have been pleased with for many years, and push it even further using the new Graduated Filter. Although you can't see the comparison in this video, I promise that the results I get now on this image using the new Lightroom 4 Beta tools far surpass anything that I have been able to accomplish until now!

  • I'm not seeing anything that can't be done in Photoshop already using adjustment layers.

  • @inflate98 Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is not a Photoshop CS product replacement but you cannot work with the same speed and ease using Photoshop.

  • I think same thing can be done in LR3. I am LR3 user

  • @manx11 Lightroom 3 has similar features but the new Process Version 2012 code surpasses the older technology in highlight and shadow detail recovery. You also do not have the ability to shift the white balance across the graduated filter in Lightroom 3.

  • @thelightroomlab I've seen the major changes in the LR4 youtube. E-mail and map integration and video support, all these are just to save time but could be done in the other manner like geotagging and emailing. Don't get me wrong I am using legit Adobe products (LR3 and Adobe Premeire), what could LR4 bring new on the table while I already have LR3 and Adobe Premiere? Not unless there there's a major discount for an upgrade from LR3 to LR4 most of the users will stick to LR3.

  • Absolute huge leap from LR3. I love it.

  • @thelightroomlab I think that's a fairly subjective statement. I have LR 3, though I have never found a compelling reason to use it. Since I know where everything is in Photoshop, and LR insists on being "different", it means learning a new interface to perform tasks I already know how to do quickly, and thus - for me - Photoshop is the better choice.
