Me and two little boys from down the street watching the northern water snake (Nerodia sipedon) that lives in my pond.

We already saw her catch and eat one frog, so I grabbed my camera to see if she would keep hunting.

I'm interested in the "wiggling" behavior she does - where she sticks her head above the water and shakes it side to side (I've also seen her bob up and down rapidly). Sometime to do with detecting or scaring the frogs perhaps?

She does catch one at the end, and swallows it as she swims away.
Nature is awesome.

  • I don't think that's JUST a water snake, it looked like a cotton mouth, all I know is it must be poisonous because it has a diamond shape head, u won't be saying it's so cute when u get to close and it bites ur leg and doesn't let go for a while. Just saying

  • @MrHAMBO96 No, it is indeed a northern water snake, Nerodia sipedon. Mean tempered but harmless. At one point that summer I captured her by hand to get some good photos and show the neighborhood kids (I have a degree in zoology).

  • @1979jkb shut the fuck up you inbred red neck

  • should have killed that piece of shit

  • Beautiful snake; you are right about their temper -- in my experience one of the quickest snakes to bite (in Ontario at least) when handled.... but so graceful and can reach such an impressive size. Thanks for posting...

  • this is not water snake hunting its water snake searching...
