Morality is mostly based on mental constructs such as empathy, which are in turn derived from deep social inhibitions which act to encourage collaboration between individuals ( a fundamental part of the success of our species).

Basically, it usually feels bad to hurt others, and so the rules and conventions of most societies have been designed to reduce suffering and promote co-operation.

I don't enjoy seeing others in pain. You don't need God to not be an asshole.
