Dichiarazione di Vienna

"La criminalizzazione dei consumatori di droghe alimenta la diffusione di Hiv/Aids".

La Dichiarazione di Vienna è la dichiarazione ufficiale della XVIII Conferenza mondiale sull'Aids (AIDS 2010) che si è tenuta a Vienna, in Austria, dal 18 al 23 luglio 2010. È stata redatta da un team di esperti internazionali e promossa da alcuni dei principali organismi scientifici a livello mondiale contro l'Hiv e sulle politiche sulla droga: l'International AIDS Society, l'International Centre for Science in Drug Policy (ICSDP), e il British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS.

La Dichiarazione di Vienna è un documento scientifico, che mira a migliorare la salute e la sicurezza pubbliche, invocando l'introduzione nelle politiche in materia di droga di principi fondati su solide basi scientifiche.

Gli scienziati, i medici e operatori sanitari e la popolazione in generale sono invitati a sostenere questa Dichiarazione, allo scopo di sensibilizzare i governi e le agenzie internazionali e di evidenziare l'urgenza di riforme a livello internazionale in materia di politiche antidroga.

Evan Wood, MD, PhD

Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of AIDS, University of British Columbia Director, Urban Health Research Initiative, BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS

Dr. Wood is a physician and clinical epidemiologist and the founder of the ICSDP. His original career focus was on the development of HIV treatment strategies, and he made several discoveries that contributed to the revision of guidelines for the treatment of HIV infection among HIV-positive adults. He has also taken special interest in evidence-based HIV treatment strategies for HIV-positive injection drug users.

Dr. Wood was the founding principal investigator of the scientific evaluation of North America's first medically supervised safer injecting facility, and has been widely involved in systematically evaluating illicit drug policies. He has co-authored more than 300 scientific papers and has received international recognition for his research. He was selected for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research's Ron Ghitter Award as the nation's top New Investigator applicant in 2003, and in 2010 received a physician of the year award from the British Medical Journal.

Dr. Wood currently leads several NIH-funded studies focusing on the prevention and treatment of HIV infection among injection drug users, as well as public health and HIV prevention strategies for street-involved youth. He is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Drug Policy and serves on the editorial boards of a host of addiction and infectious disease journals.
