@jenmajol some say right before the Taualuga is performed, the Taupou or the Manaia would be given the Nifo Oti translated as the "tooth of death", traditionally was a weapon during wars, Samoans combined the nifo oti with a hook at the tip which was used to snare parts of the enemy's body. It was used in the dance to symbolise that Samoans were able to act very hostile, yet look elegant at the same time.
