The dog from which the golden retriever descends is the wavy-coated retriever. It is also the ancestor of the flat-coated retriever. It was derived from crossing the St. John's water dog (the ancestor of the Labrador) with either a setter or a collie-type. In fact, the wave to its coat is said to come from a collie from the border region.
