When I was a 15 years old my parents took me to Manhattan. We walked on Broadway and discovered a snare drummer presenting tricks and talking about Gene Krupa. I liked him so much that I watched him several times a few days later. That was in July 1978. A few month before I bought my first snare drum. Yesterday I saw Taxi driver for the first time. I was surprised. Wonderful!
According to IMDB.com this drummer called Gene Palmer can be seen in one more movie called "Hero at large" (from 1980)
Yeah, I almost affectionately remember this guy. I used to see him playing his drums around the mid-town area when I first started working in Manhattan, in the early 80's. I would stop to watch him sometimes. He always had that jet back slick hair of his. And his eye's would always be facing the sky, as he played. I sensed that there was something not quite right about him. I didn't know if he was homeless, or what. But, I remember feeling bad for the guy. What ever happened to him ?
In defense of Gene I am familiar with this time in NYC as well. Gene kept up his appearance with dignity well into the late eighties. That's the last time I saw him. There was another guy who was a real street type homeless person who carried around a pair of drumsticks and would be stooped over a lot of the time playing his beats on the sidewalk as he walked around. He would also play on different surfaces eg like metal in the subway station. Gene, on the other hand, always had a snare drum.
He is really good but in Taxi Driver, he cracked me up laughing. When he raises up the left stick and makes those big eyes, the slicked back hair and that jacket. He did'nt sound anything like Gene Krupa. He twirled the sticks better than he played.
The translation SUKS!!!!!!

The part where the drummer says "Now back to the Gene Krupa syncopated style" is included in the song KRUPA of Apollo 440
