This excellent animation, developed with support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, portrays the events that occur after a mosquito becomes infected with malaria. This happens when the insect sucks the blood of an infected human. Once inside the mosquito, the parasites reproduce in the gut and accumulate in the salivary glands, ready to infect another human host with the next bite.
