Kevin Russell has been coaching and playing volleyball since 1991. He began playing in high school in Arlington, Texas, in 1991. In 1993, upon beginning college as a scholarship baseball player, he was recruited and given a scholarship to play for Texas Tech University men's team, where he was first string starting setter for more than three years. After graduating, he went on to coach a high-level club volleyball team called "Take It By Storm" for five years in Plano, Texas. The team made junior nationals 4 of those years. He also head-coached an elite 16 and under girls traveling team. Upon moving to Chicago in 2001, he was offered a position coaching for Ace, Point, Match club volleyball from 2001-2002, as well as a Chicago-based 16 and under girls elite team. From 2003 to 2005 he became the head practice coach for DePaul University's womens' program. During the 2006 season, he became head coach for Illinois Math and Science Academy in Aurora, Ill., and finished the season with a record of 18-3.
