"African Flower" came about as a result of completing another project called "The Three Chimneys" which involved the use of an electro-acoustic nylon-strung guitar which was strung with 4 Nylon 3rd and 2 Nylon 2nd strings resulting in a six note scale based on the scale of C Lydian Augmented. However, for "African Flower" this guitar was retuned to produce the first six notes of the scale of F Major, in this case 6th = F, 5th = G, 4th = A, 3rd = Bb, 2nd = C and 1st = D. This brought about some very unusual close-interval chord voicings which were used throughout a 14 bar sequence based on the key of F Major with a time signature of 10/8. Theoretically when using Virtual Studio Technology (VST) there is no limit to the number of midi or audio tracks than can be created within a single project. However, a total of 16 tracks were used for "African Flower", these being: TRACK #1 = CLOSE-TUNE GUITAR (the electro-acoustic nylon-strung guitar as previously described) played 'dry' with no effects and fed directly into a Lexicon Omega Audio Interface configured within Cubase 5 Advanced Music Production Software - TRACK #2 = KEYBOARD SEQUENCER (using the notation from TRACK #1 programmed in as a Midi part assigned to the VST Output for Halion-One set to patch -- CP 2006 ) TRACK #3 = BASS GUITAR (programmed in as a Midi part assigned to the VST Output for Halion-One set to patch -- Finger Bass ) TRACKS #4 to #12 = DRUMS & PERCUSSION (programmed in as a Midi Drum Map assigned to the VST Output for Groove-Agent-One (GA-1) set to patch -- Standard Hybrid Kit with the components of the kit split up and sent to 9 different outputs in GA-1 ) TRACK #13 = MAIN THEME (a melody harmonised in 3rds and 6ths written as a Midi 'synth' part and assigned to the VST output for Pro-52 set to patch -- Soft Horns) TRACKS #14 & #15 = GUITARS #1 and #2 (a Gibson SG Special used here for both tracks playing the melodic material from the main theme (as in Track #13) recorded 'dry' with no effects and fed directly into a Lexicon Omega Audio Interface configured within Cubase 5 Advanced Music Production Software - TRACKS #16 = GUITAR SOLO (a Gibson SG Special used again for the guitar solo, recorded 'dry' with no effects and fed directly into a Lexicon Omega Audio Interface configured within Cubase 5 Advanced Music Production Software. When all the tracks had been recorded they were mixed and mastered in Cubase 5 and then exported as a single audio file prior to importing into a Windows Movie Maker Video project to which the required graphics were added. The finished video (displaying a .wmv file extension) was finally uploaded to You Tube. Simple isn't it ? Simple it isn't !
Wow, what a ride! The melody took me back to the days of Neil Larsen and his epic "Jungle Fever". The guitar solo is beyond words. Wonderful precision. Thank you Bernie!
