A new CD from Mary Hopkin and Morgan Visconti release date 25/10/2010

Mary Hopkin sings a duet with the late Sir Harry Secombe.

Sir Harry Secombe, was a Welsh entertainer with a fine tenor singing voice and a talent for comedy especially noted for his character Neddy Seagoon in the Goon Shows.

Dafydd y Garreg Wen was the popular name given to David Owen, a Welsh harpist living in Caernarvonshire in the first half of the 18th century. He composed the song as he lay on his deathbed, it is said he called for his harp and played this tune. It was later published by Edward Jones in 'Musical and Poetical Relics of the Welsh Bards' in 1784

DAFYDD Y GARREG WEN

"Cariwch," medd Dafydd, "fy nhelyn i mi,
Ceisiaf cyn marw roi tôn arni hi.
Codwch fy nwylaw i gyrraedd y tant;
Duw a'ch bendithio fy ngweddw a'm plant!"
"Neithiwr mi glywais lais angel fel hyn:
'Dafydd, tyrd adref, a chwarae trwy'r glyn!'
Delyn fy mebyd, ffarwel i dy dant!
Duw a'ch bendithio fy ngweddw a'm plant!"

DAVID OF WHITE ROCK

Dafydd said, 'Bring me my harp,
I'll try to put a tune on it before I die.
Raise my hand to reach the string.
God bless you my widow and my children.
Last night I heard the voice of an angel saying:
'Dafydd, come home and play through the glen!'
Harp of my childhood, farewell to your music,
God bless you my widow and my children.

  • Both came from Swansea

  • @macshealbhaich almost, Mary was born in Ystradgynlais and brought up in Pontardawe

  • It sounds like Edison recorded this right after he invented the light bulb.

  • @meanwiddlekid Thank you. We're all refreshed and challenged by your unique point of view.

  • Hyfryd - Cerys Matthews sings this song in her most recent album ('Tir'), and cited this version as one of her favourites. I can see why. :)

  • @YMarchogGwachul

It is lovely, I so wish they had recorded it,

  • @meanwiddlekid I thought ready kilowatt invented the light bulb?

  • @meanwiddlekid What a funny, matter-of-fact remark on this solemn and lofty performance! You made me laugh:) I like the singers though.

  • I do not understand Welsh, but this is lovely.

  • @docmalthus - the Welsh school system encourages music and song. The English leave all that to Simon Cowell. In Lancashire, my kid's primary school had to hold jumble sales to raise money for a oiano - the local primary school where I now live has cellos and violins AND a good school choir!
