Josh Ries of Littlestown, PA (http://www.joshriesglass.com/) sent this exceptional blown glass orb to my studio to be turned into a plasma sculpture. A single electrode was attached to the bottom of the glass, then it was placed into an oven and connected to the pumping manifold where it was evacuated and baked out at 500 degrees F for 24 hours. After the proper vacuum had been reached, the vessel was back filled to a specific amount with pure xenon gas and sealed off.

When connected to a high voltage/high frequency power supply, the xenon gas ionizes and produces plasma streamers with both a linear discharge and a glow discharge. Placing a hand on the glass changes the streamers to primarily linear discharges that are attracted to where it is touched. This sculpture stands about 13" tall above the base and is about 6" in diameter.
