Jimmy Ellis was an Elvis impersonator but started as an ordinary singer - apparently he didn't know he sang in the Elvis style until people told him (I don't believe that either!) He went under the name of Orion and wore a mask to cover his eyes (so people could think it may have been Elvis.
Any fan immediately can tell it's not Elvis singing. But to the casual listener - maybe it was?!

Jimmy Ellis sadly passed away after a robbery at his general / pawn store and he was shot during the raid.

  • Jimmy Ellis was no impersonator!!! Get your facts straight! He never claimed to be nor wanted to impersonate Elvis. And he was shot and killed in his pawn shop/convenience store, not his fathers hardware store!!!! The mask was Shelby Singleton's idea, not Jimmy's. Jimmy never wanted to wear the mask, and was fired from Sun Records after removing it and refusing to wear it any longer!

So he sang in his own voice and didn't fake being Elvis when he sang with Jerry Lee Lewis? Course he did. He also died his hair black and wore a stupid mask on his records - the idea he and his team were trying to do was that Elvis could be him. That's what I call an IMPERSONATOR.

Thanks for clearing up the pawn shop business. I was recalling from memory what happened. I'm an Elvis fan and could tell you what Elvis did and where his mum got his first guitar, not Jimmy Ellis.

  • @paulreno1 as I explained to u it was never Jimmy's idea to make people think he was Elvis. He was totally against it. he just wanted a career in show business. It was singleton who dubbed his voice with Jerry Lee and did not put his name on the record so that people would think he was Elvis. Jimmy just wanted to be himself. I am a fan of Jimmy's. I also like Elvis. They were both great singers!

  • @barbdel56

Jimmy was indeed a very good singer. And Elvis was a brilliant singer. I remember first hearing the Jerry Lee Lewis/ Jimmy duet and some people were thinking it was Elvis. As I've listened to Elvis for all of my life, I knew it wasn't Elvis. But I remember people who were convinced it was!

  • @paulreno1 THERE WERE TIMES WHEN JIMMY'S VOICE WAS VERY CLOSE TO ELVIS AND YOU HAD TO LISTEN CLOSELY TO TELL THEM APART BUT AS JIMMY GOT OLDER HIS VOICE CHANGED. SOMETIMES I THINK HE MAY HAVE DID IT INTENTIONALLY SO AS NOT TO SOUND SO MUCH LIKE ELVIS
