Concerto grosso in D Op.6 No.1 (first part): Largo-Allegro
The first ever complete recording of all 12 Concerti grossi Op.6 of Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) by Dean Eckertsen conducting the Corelli Tri-Centenary String Orchestra on Vox PL 7893 from 1952. This orchestra, mounted by Eckertsen to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Corelli's birth, featured Daniel Guilet, Edwin Bachmann and Frank Miller as soloists assisted by members of the New York Philharmonic. The records play at 33rpm, but still maintain features from the older 78rpm format: thick and heavy platter lacking the raised areas of later LP's, constant groove pitch, eccentric run-off groove, album with book-style sleeves (though with added flap). However, it already features the narrower lead-in groove pitch and the ring style label from Columbia's original LP. Vox set the groove pitch for 26 minutes capacity and left it that way for the entire set, so that the 25-minute first side is filled to capacity while the 15-minute fifth side is a partial groove. I feel the need to forgive the bad shape of the records, especially in Concertos 10 and 12 where I had to do a lot of work to get rid of stubborn skips.
