In MWSD people take lessons to learn the Square Dance Commands (eg. Circle Left, Right, RH Stars, Right & Left Thru, Ladies Chain, etc) The MWSD Caller creates Choreography based on what the dancers know and what formation they are in (EG. Lines, Waves, Boxes, Columns). The choreo can be very easy or challenging. What I like about Contra and why I teach it in my Square Dance Classes, is that it reinforces the concept of team work. Without teamwork, neither form of dance will be successful.
Why is one form of dance better than another? It's a matter of personal preference. Without Contra (New England Folk Dancing) we would not have Modern Western Square Dancing. IMHO, go out and dance, have a great time and invite people to join you and don't forget to smile :-)
There are a few moves in common with Squares, but the form is very different ... instead of dancing in a group of 4 couples you dance in long lines progressing up and down the line. At the end of a set you've danced with everyone! It's a blast. I was there that night ... it is my voice saying thank you very much!!
@bobvanwest Yes I think it is a good experience of socializing and group dynamics.

in square dancing you dance only with the people in your square.
In contra, you dance with everyone in your line,
In squares, the caller calls every move.
In contra, the caller shuts up after the dance is learned (unless there'a a train wreck!)
