(my video camera overloaded on the first try so I gave up and just took audio at about 12 feet of the speaker)
you can listen also with headphones

This is a little rough condition Karlson 8 kit with the Tang Band 1772 fullrange. Sound was picked up with a Zoom H2. External bulk of this cabinet is about 1.1 cubic feet.

Karlson 8 or 8K was introduced in late 1954. Later models had a more curved reflector panel but remained the same on the outside.

Sound quality with 1772 is quite good. 8K can sound dead if a fullrange driver has poor highs.

I believe 1772 could work in a range of coupler sizes. 1772 is a nice driver in general.

  • Tang Band 1772 looks nice on paper and sounds great here. I bought an 8" fullrange from Lafayette Radio back around 1971 and put it in a Karlson enclosure and it sounded like crap. The problem may have been that the speaker had the wrong Qts, it was really forward with no bass. Those wings on the enclosure absolutely have to introduce hollow coloration due to cavity resonance. I think an open baffle is the way to go.

  • Very nice! What sort of amp are you using?

  • Very interesting.

Music is as unusual as the speaker design?
