This is the Studio Version of "Gay Boys", written by Phil Lynott and played by his post-Lizzy group, Grand Slam. Grand Slam was given some time in the studio in 1984, but never received a recording deal to make an official album, and disbanded in January 1985, a year before Phil Lynott passed away.

Lyrics:
Now here is the story of a modern day romance
About Billy and Joey, how it never stood a chance
These days...

Billy's in the corner, standin' in the rain
Billy and Joey are loves but Joey says he don't wanna see Billy again
'I don't wanna see you again'

Billy's in the kitchen, cryin' out his eyes
Joey, he's goin' out somewhere, he's puttin' makeup on his eyes
He's got makeup on his eyes...

You see these days, all the world's a stage for gay boys...

Joey--he's a dancer--you can check him twice nightly
Billy's in the pourin' rain, says he never treat me rightly
'He never treat me rightly'

Chorus:
So when he's right (he's right), he's right (he's right)
He knows how to get things done
And when he's wrong (he's right), he's right (he's right)
He knows the weak from strong
And when he's right (he's right), he's right (he's right)
He knows how to get things done
He knows how to get along
He knows he don't belong...gay boys...gay boys!

Now Billy works in a nightclub where the lights are low
Some say it's a gay bar, but Joey doesn't know
And he hangs out at the stage door
And watches Joey go...

And Joey's goin' crazy
Pullin' out his hair
He's been searchin' for Billy but he can't find him anywhere

(Chorus)

(These days, these days) Still standin' in the rain...
(These days, these days) Joey wants you back again
(These days, these days) Gay boys!

Step it up and treat me nice...

(These days, these days) What's goin' on?
(These days, these days) Oh Billy, Joey did something wrong
(These days, these days) Gay boys!

Step it up and treat me right...

(These days, these days) All the world is a stage
(These days, these days) You've got it made
(These days, these days) Gay boys!

Won't you forgive me...

(These days, these days) You know it ain't there...
(These days, these days) Oh Billy, I really care
(These days, these days) Gay boys!

  • I'd love to read the lyrics since english is not my first language and i can hardly distinguish them. Anybody knows a link to them? I couldn't find them anywhere on the web...

  • Posted the lyrics in the info section. Should be 99% accurate.

  • ???

Phil is right in the middle...Brian Downey is also on the far right. This was before he left Grand Slam.

  • Imagine how controversial the subject would have been in the 80's. I remember homosexuality as still being a taboo subject, and most rock bands were anxious to keep the macho facade. More power to you, Philip!

  • weird? get over yourself. this may be the only song about gay romance performed by a "straight" rock group. the fact that lynott wrote this proves that he was more than just a provincial, heterocentric cock rocker............

  • @kjrossblackmore You're kidding, right?

  • Phil and Freddy is/are/was/were the best rock singers on earth. this is my opinion.

  • i suppose we should commend phil lynott because he had enough "balls" to write a song about "gay boys." and it is a good song. in fact, it compares favorably with the best of thin lizzy. but the lyric is a tissue of cliches and stereotypes. perhaps lynott should have called the song "drag boys (and those who love them)."

  • @kjrossblackmore hahah

  • Phil had such a talent to tell a story. he could jump right in the skin of his charachters. I am amazed again at his foresight.

  • yep thats Phil, to me sexy till the end. xx
