You're right. It was a stupid idea to introduce a new species without considering the future implications. We can't introduce another species to control it because we don't know what would happen...the new species may be worse for our Australian ecosystem. Aussie scientists are working on different measures of controlling the cane toad, though, so we're hoping they'll be successful soon.
