I have a theory as to why she took this role. First, she destroys Hitler (literally). The Nazi role in the 1940 is what hurt her career, if you recall. So it's a message to her critics, throwing it in their face so to speak. Second, she is destroying a face -- and her own face was effectively destroyed, compared to what it was -- so it is like saying that this Hollywood fascination with looks needs to be destroyed. She was a non-conformist. Or maybe she just needed the money -- I don't know.

I love Veronica Lake and there are a lot of false rumors about her. According to Mrs Lake she was cheating and dumped by hollywood because of Joan Caulfield and Bing Crosby. Joan Caulfield was a very dangerous and jealous bitch that at the time was desperately trying to take Mrs Lake place.

Veronica Lake bleibt unsterblich, daran ändert auch dieser letzte widerliche Film von ihr nichts. Sie war damals geistig und körperlich sehr angeschlagen und das sieht man halt. Wir kennen ihre tragische Lebensgeschichte und deshalb überraschen die Bilder nicht, aber sie schmerzen. Ich werde mir diesen Clip wohl nie mehr antun, Filme wie "Blue Dahlia", "The Glass Key" oder "This Gun For Hire" als Noir- UND Veronica Lake-Fan aber noch oft auf DVD ansehen. Veronica, Noir Goddess Forever !

Veronica's beauty is showcased magnificently at 6:18, when she asks Hitler if she like her little maggots. Sublime.

I think she was proud and gratified to have an opportunity to display her patriotism and love of country in play-acting the application voracious maggots to Adolf Hitler's flesh. Too bad this wasn't a porn flick, she could have been masturbating too.

@lakewalker11 I vehemently disagree! This movie is great, a masterpiece! Veronica handles the maggots deftly because she had practice, living in alleys around Union Station when she was homeless.

Veronica was a crazy alcoholic bitch. Who knows how many scum had a go at her over the intervening years. Wonderful and exciting! Look at her bad teeth. She wears them as a medal commemorating a life lived with gusto, an authentic life. Too bad she didn't do porn.
