Coke never threatened to take away their sponsoship. Athens was very arrogant in their presentation, infact one Athens official demanded that Athens recieve the games.

This was one of my proudest moments as an Atlantan. I was at work at the IRS when this happened. In such a stuffy atmosphere, there was not an eruption of applause. Instead there were gasps and squeals. It was all rather comical.

New Orleans probably might be the next US city to host it.

and Melbourne was even more arrogant! Our 1996 Olympic Bid embarrassed this city even to this day!

as a Melbournian, I was pleased that Atlanta won the bid for 1996 rather than Melbourne, whose bid was botched by trade unions, a total public transport shutdown the day Juan Antonio Samnaranch visited to inspect the city's suitability to host a Games. I don't want an Olympic Games in Melbourne, it is not a suitable city, it is overcrowded enough as is, the public transport is poor, the weather is bad the majority of the time, the traffic jams are intolerable, the list goes on!

My family had just moved down there when the IOC had chosen Atlanta to host 1996 Olympics. Though I don't remember it since I was only 2 in half at the time it makes me proud as new Atlantan like Kelson64 said above to be able to be living there when when they were given the games. how ever we had moved back 3 years prior to the games taking place. When this I cry out of joy that we were chosen. I hope the U.S. gets the 2024 games. And I will say sometimes I miss living down there.

The winner should be Melbourne, Australia. The city is really beautiful with many parks and sport complex. It also hosts 3 annual big sport events: F1 GP, Australian Open and Melbourne Cup. I really hope Melbourne would win the 2024 or 2028 bid.

Their gasps were prophetic as Atlanta went on to preside over the worst olympic games in modern times. Had the games been held in New York, Chicago or Washington, I am sure they would have been a success. The 'Coca Cola' Olympics were an embarrassment to the United States as they perpetuated all the worst stereotypes of Americans held by those who are anti-American. If Chicago gets to host the 2020 or 2024 games, hopefully they will expunge the memories of Atlanta's debacle.

Have some sympathy for America the bomb in the park was probably set by someone who was mad at how great the games were going because they wanted their city to host it.
