When i suction my sand bed in the fish tank i lose max like 100 grains no more, it sucks up into the gravel pump then when you release suction it drops the sand back down. So you can clean the sand itself if you get algae build up near the glass easy clean. But what i find is if you mix large pebbles with sand you get a better cleaning bottom. Just put half side sand and half side gravel and your fish mix it up after a few months.

"but when you siphone it it sucks the sand out too."
A little yes but I still agree that sand and other fine grade substrate is easier to clean. Sand gathers waste at the top meaning less suction on the sand itself. With course gravel shit and food goes all the way to the bottom making it a little more of a pain in the ass to clean correctly.

I really like your fish and tank-- is the sand messier/harder to clean as opposed to gravel?
These sands were bought from Menards at $4 for 50lbs bags. Very easy to cleaned, just had to rinse it a few times before putting in my tanks. I find sand to be easier to clean as most of the fish waste and foods will be on top the sand for easy siphoning.
