Lannie Ferguson, South African barefoot tennis sensation and distant cousin to distance runner Zola Budd, demonstrates his backhand slice technique as part of a recruiting video sent to American college coaches. Lannie, who began playing barefoot tennis on grass, has built the calluses on the bottom of his feet to the point where he feels prepared to train and compete on hard courts in the US. He extols the virtues of playing without shoes and socks, claiming that it promotes a more natural movement on the court that reduces foot fatigue and injuries in the lower extremities. It also helps prevent toenail fungus.

  • Quite an impressive young man! Im sure he will have a plethora of college options. Although the culture associated with tennis in the modern era encourages the employment of the most cutting-edge equipment, little Lannie's 'tribute to humble beginnings' style of play represents a victory for the common man.
