Now that we have the oven made, its time to try it out. I chose....a pizza. Since this small oven doesn't get high enough temps to make a crusty crust like a kitchen oven at 350 or more, you have to begin to bake the crust FIRST. If you try to make it with all the toppings, the slow cooking will just make it really soggy and not worth eating, unless you like pizza pudding, :)

I also patted out the crust THIN so that it would cook faster.

Using black cookie sheets, especially to cap over the pizza crust helps to maintain temps so the crust will cook faster.

Between the black painted interior, the black metal rack on the floor of the oven, and the black cookie sheets, there are plenty of hot surfaces to keep heat high enough to cook foods well and evenly, BUT, one has to make sure they follow the guidelines I have shown to be successfull to cook in such a small uninsulated oven.

  • i live in sunny fl,could i reach 250 degress or even 300 degress,.with this ,and or with the larger type box oven,thanks

  • if you have a perfectly CLEAR day, you can achieve it with both at 250. If you want 300 you will need more reflectors with the larger box oven. the more reflectors, the higher the temps. and be sure to remember, KEEP THEM AIMED at the sun as much as possible for better results. usually, repositioning once or twice an hour maintains good temps.

  • Yes it does. You need the interior to be black to absorb heat. with a shiny surface, all your heat bounces back out AWAY from the reflection. In a bigger oven, one can have the floor black, and the walls black half way up, and leave the foil in the upper unpainted to reflect rays onto the top of the baking dish. The combination of both work well, but to grab and absorb the most heat from the sun, ALL black is best for the interior of a box oven.

  • what if ... what if you have a mirror effect, like with the top of the box that you cut out up, (cut by three sides and scored on one for trapdoor) would that still work? because i have to do this for a school project which is why im asking
