@tonysshadow There's a west African instrument called an akonting that's considered the closest ancestor of the banjo. It has a gourd body, a hide head, and one drone string and two melody strings, which are all plucked in fast arpeggiating patterns. The connection between west African folk instruments and the banjo is both well researched and well established.
