In 1999 the world's population reached six billion people. In another 30 years the population is expected to grow to nine billion. The growing population and limited agricultural resources continue to threaten our ability to feed the world.

Nearly three-quarters of the Earth's surface is covered with water. When we remove the portion represented by oceans, lakes, rivers and wetlands what's left is land.

But take a closer look. Half of the land on Earth is mountains, desserts, forest, tundra and ice caps. Half again of what remains represents areas that are too rocky, too wet, too cold, too steep, or soil that is too poor to produce food.

The small portion of land that is left has the capacity for food production. However, half of this land is buried beneath cities, highways and industries.

This leaves just three percent of our planet available to feed the human race. Out of this small piece, we depend on just six inches of topsoil to sustain human life on Earth.

Today, farmers are using new technologies that help them to produce more food without the need for more land. Farmers also practice sustainable farm practices that enable the land to continue producing food well into the future.
