Johannes Berauer's Time Travel refers to the composer's experience of time as he has moved back and forth between his native Austria and other places where he has lived. He writes, "Whenever I leave my country to live somewhere else for a while...I feel, when I return, as if I were continuing just where I left off a couple of months earlier....It's like changing from one universe to another..." In Time Travel, Berauer explores the idea of parallel strands of time.
Berauer composed Time Travel with the foreknowledge that it would be set for dance by Daniel McCusker. McCusker's two set out references a poem by Galway Kinnell and draws on his recent Variations for 4 Spaces and Many Dancers. Often, as in this piece, McCusker develops his material collaboratively with his dancers.
