A lot of REM songs are tributes to the past. "The Lotus" reflects Roxy Music's "Love is the Drug". "Everybody Hurts" is an echo of "Bridge Over Troubled Waters". They don't sound the same but it is as if REM were Time Travelling back to the 70's. "Crush with Eyeliner" is definatley right off of Lou Reed's Transformer. I think "Wake Up Bomb" is a tribute to Alice Cooper's "Under My Wheels". The references to Muscle Cars is pretty clear (Cherry Bomb Glass Pack mufflers).
