Match Day 2011 UC San Diego School of Medicine

For thousands of medical students across the country, including 127 students -- 66 women and 61 men -- from UC San Diego School of Medicine, the contents of an envelope reveals the hospital and city where they will pursue their next step to becoming a doctor.

On Match Day, nationwide, medical students simultaneously learned the results of their applications to medical residency programs -- a process that starts for most at the beginning of the final year of medical school.

Parents, spouses, significant others, siblings, friends and, in some cases, children gather round the students, to celebrate, cry, pop open champagne and toast bright futures.
