MuseScore is a FREE open source alternative that you should look into. There are versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux. My very brief tutorial goes over the Linux Mint version.

Great screencast! It appears Linux Mint still features an old version of MuseScore. It's currently up to 0.9.6.3 which is a seriously improved version over 0.9.5 and older.

@musescore Thanks for the comment. I am enjoying this open source alternative. Not to knock Finale or Sibelius, but there's other stuff out there and I like to let people in on alternatives.
