This is a DOD footage of the first detonation of the HARDTACK I series at Enewetak Atoll, performed on April 28, 1958 under code name YUCCA. The 1.7 kiloton nuclear device was detonated on the stratosphere, after the balloon -which departed from the deck of the USS BOXER aircraft carrier- reached float altitude of 86.000 feet.

  • At least it only was a 1.7KT device in modern terms a firecracker so it probably did not harm the upper atmosphere as much as the hydrogen bomb tests which such as Tsar bomba were as big as 50 megatons or nearly 30,000 times larger.

  • no just certain humans in certain countries

  • My father was on this ship just prior to this event. When the testing was conducted, only essential personnel remained onboard.

  • interesting , they exploded nuclear bombs in the upper atmosphere. Huh I wonder how much that effects the layers of our planet and i wonder how many times they did this stupid shit? Humans are completely hopeless and horrifying.
