  • you have to only have one piston per cylinder, so how do you have 2 pistons per cylinder is above science?

  • @mlnhead1 dont understand your question?

  • @allistairc123 the title says 6 cylinder 12 piston so how would you 2 pistons per cylinder is what he is asking, i was wondering how that would be possible also

  • @kita534 your question has been answered numerous times in the comments below, keep reading

  • An awesome bit of technology...You know I see all this fighting over the nationality of this engine...Hilarious... as far as I am concerned, a brilliant mind came up with idea..

Just so happened to be the brilliance of our British friends :)

  • For those of you who are asking how this principle works, it is laid out similar to a Porsche or Subaru boxer engine but, instead of one crankshaft in the middle "pushing" pistons out, this engine has 2 cranks out at the ends and they push the 2 pistons ( 2 in each cylinder ) in towards each other. The ports are similar to a std 2 strokes but the pistons meet in the middle and they each compress towards one another, so each piston acts as 1/2 of the squish band to the other. It's pretty cool.

  • yeah! It's a very brilliant old engine!!! 2 pistons into 1 cilinder!!! "wow" from Argentine, Córdoba my friend.

  • Fascinating engine. I've seen models of Doxford engines before, but they only have one crankshaft (with really long connecting rods going down the outside of the cylinders to connect the top pistons to it), whereas this has two crankshafts. It makes me wonder how the top crankshaft is lubricated?

  • @urielitocd 2 pistons share one cylinder, yes. They're opposed to eachother in long cylinders. Two crankshafts are connected to six pistons each, one crankshaft in either end of the cylinders. It's a brilliant old engine.: )

  • you have 12 pistons into 1 cilinder???

  • this is the engine that was fitted to the Chieftain Tank :)

  • That thing is bigger than a whole smart car.

  • @theseeker15

    Thanks for the tip.

When I do get out that way, I'll try to make it around Halloween, so I can also see Whitby at its finest as well.

  • @DrFruikenstein If and when you do I Urge you to visit the national railway museum in York. Its free to get in and they have a cross sectioned napier deltic on display, amongst other things includung sir nigels gresley Mallard and they will have in april the flying scotsman when it returns from renovation.

  • @theseeker15 Fairbanks-Morse did exactly the same thing.

Many were used as Marine gen sets engines on Submarines as well as stationary. Ixcellent engineering!
