In 2009 Ife Olatunji traveled from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Manchester England in pursuit of a Masters in Visual Anthropology at the University of Manchester. While studying abroad Ms. Olatunji documented her time in Pushkar, Rajasthan India teaching art and film to a small group of students attending the Foundation Fior di Loto School.
As a Milwaukee artist and activist, Ife Olatunji worked as an Americorps VISTA and Public Ally to provide educational support to the Service Learning department at UWM, and interned as a community outreach coordinator for Milwaukee Public Theatre. Using theatre, dance, photography and video, Ms. Olatunji has captured the spirit of Milwaukee youth for more than 5 years. In 2009 Ms. Olatunji traveled to Manchester University in Manchester England to receive her Masters in Visual Anthropology. To complete her degree, Ms. Olatunji traveled to Pushkar, Rajasthan, India for 3 months to teach art and film to a small group of girls attending the Foundation Fior di Loto School.
She created a documentary entitled Lessons from the Tiger, highlighting the educational disparities affecting little girls in India. Now that Ms. Olatunji has completed this journey she has returned to her home in Milwaukee to present her documentary to schools, organizations, and communities. Freedom Lover Films seeks to mentor new Visual Anthropologists, and to identify a group of young women and provide an opportunity for them to join Ms. Olatunji as she returns to the community she served in India to increase the impact of this service learning experience.
For the past year Ms. Olatunji has been touring Europe showing her documentary film. The film maker hopes to make Milwaukee audiences aware of the similarities and differences of adolescents from both countries. By bringing awareness to the plight of women in India and abroad, Ife hopes to gather support for organizations like Foundation Fior di Loto.
