KVM virtualization technology supports a VNC connection that gives you full, physical-like access to the console of your VPS. Use this method to reset forgotten root password. See http://perfohost.com/kvm.vps.html
Another way which may be easier to do would be to append the word 'single' without quotes on the same line. That would mount everything as normal and drop you to a shell prompt as root.
Are you sure you have GRUB loader?

Doesn't work for me. When I turn on my gentoo linux PC I don't see any "GNU grub" menu.
It boots straight to the OS where I can't log in. The CD-ROM is damaged too so that means I can't boot from a CD.
That and the BIOS is locked so I can't change the boot order. Of course, I have no idea what the BIOS password is.
Its a laptop.
Any ideas?
