@Filmmaker55 Whats the closest one to wethersfield? I live in wethersfield (its like a minute walk away from hartford)

@Filmmaker55 gamer1489 had the right idea but got the answer mixed up a little. @gamer1489 YOU have part of your answer right They do use clay BUT
The thicker layer of clay is on the spine / back of the blade. The curve is created as the steel cools because the harder steel on the cutting edge has more carbon locked into the molecular structure and expands accordingly.

That forge is the greatest idea ive ever seen in may entire life AWSOME!!!

@gamer1489 Yes, but even before they do the clay mixture, they DO in fact put in a small curve in the correct direction. It might not even be much of a curve, to the naked eye, but they do.

heey a little tip on the steel try to find old files for knifes and daggers and for swords use old blade springs or if you have alot of time try this: get some cheap iron slab from the shop just cheap steel you can buy them in meters fold that double and place files between it then forge that together itl be a laminate of steel very easy but lots of work

Yeah, not how a katana gets its curve... Its from when the steel at the cutting edge of the blade forms millions of molecular crystals, which expands the metal on the edge, while the spine of the katana takes longer to cool forming less molecular crystals. Also how a katana gets its hamon and its strong edge with tough core. btw this happens during the tempering process, not the forging. Thats where the actual skill and mastery is.
were do you get the steel to use

any local scrap yard. I think Jeff went to a place called Vulcan Scrap Metal in Stamford CT. If you are in southern CT there's a ton of these places around. Sometimes you can fine rebar on the size of the road.

The correct way to make a bend in a katana, a real katana, is using clay on top of the steel for the final cooling process. You use a special clay mixture and put a thinner film on the back end and a thicker film on the edge. Doing so will force the back to cool and contract faster than the edge. For more details: search 'How to make a katana' here on YouTube and there'll be a history of the Samurai by National Geographicn and it explains everything.
