This has to be the most wonderful scene I ever observed in a zoo. Tua, the Zoo's female orangutan had been very irritable. For almost an hour, she had hissed and even pounded on the wall and on the glass a few times. Throughout that time, she clutched baby Batu, and occasionally patted Batu on the head to reassure her that she wasn't mad at her. And baby Batu seemed calm and mostly curious about what was happening.

It may have been the sounds of the gibbons in the background, or something else, but Sugi, the male orangutan, and father of the baby, who had been quietly minding his own business the whole time, finally came over, put his arm around Tua, and then put his hand under her chin, and kissed her!

And you can see the change in Tua's attitude at that instant. I tell you, sometimes it's really nice to have an understanding man around if you're a woman in a bad mood!

Note to men: He had tried unsuccessfully earlier to do the same thing. In fact, that time, it looked like she wanted to rip his arm off. So, don't give up if the first attempt to appease an irritable woman is unsuccessful.

  • A touching moment, you were so lucky to witness!

  • @katt12102 That's why I like to stay at each exhibit for a long time. Often things like this happen right after something else that had caught visitors' attention stops and all the other visitors have walked away!

  • They kissed and he ran away story of my life,

  • @Swedetres In this case, Sugi probably ran away because Tua was in a bad mood, and sometimes when she is in a bad mood, she smacks him or bops him on the head after he kisses her! When that happens, he usually comes back and tries again in a little while. (It would be interesting to know if Tua's technique would work the same way with human males, too.)
