If my video blog was to have a title video, like an album has a title song, this would probably be it.

"All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1803-1882

emergence [ih-mur-juhns] -
1. When unexpected patterns arise out of simpler interactions.

This video doesn't necessarily represent my belief about how life came to be. You see, I think that having beliefs; meaning accepting one story and rejecting the rest, is not appropriate when it comes to these perennial questions. It's more honest to entertain the many possibilities, and live and come to grips with the uncertainty. I do however find that this particular hypothesis is compelling and immensely beautiful and intriguing, far beyond most of the rather terrestrial "origin of life" stories out there. So I wanted to share the idea, and see what others think.

"This I believe: That the free, exploring mind of the individual
human is the most valuable thing in the world.
And this I would fight for: The freedom of the mind to take any
direction it wishes, undirected.
And this I must fight against: Any idea, religion, or government
which limits or destroys the individual." -- John Steinbeck

"When a young person loses faith in his religion because he
begins to study science and its methodology it isn't that
through the obtaining of real knowledge that he knows it all,
but he suddenly realizes that he doesn't know it all." (p. 36)
-- Richard P. Feynman

To teach how to live without certainty and yet without being
paralysed by hesitation is perhaps the chief thing that
philosophy, in our age, can do for those who study it. -Bertrand
Russell

"...I don't have to know an answer. I don't feel frightened by
not knowing things, by being lost in the mysterious universe
without having any purpose, which is the way it really is, as far
as I can tell, possibly. It doesn't frighten me." --Richard
Feynman

"The only way in which a human being can make some
approach to knowing the whole of a subject is by hearing what
can be said about it by persons of every variety of opinion and
studying all modes in which it can be looked at by every
character of mind. No wise man ever acquired his wisdom in
any mode but this. " -John Stuart Mill

"Here lies the power...: helping ourselves and others to see
some of the possibilities inherent in viewpoints other than
one's own; encouraging the free interchange of ideas;
welcoming fresh approaches to the problems of life; urging the
fullest, most vigorous use of critical self-examination."
-- Adlai Stevenson (as quoted on page 81 of A Chosen Faith)

"A believer is a bird in a cage. A freethinker is an eagle parting
the clouds with tireless wing."
-Robert Ingersoll

Umm... wow!!! I hope you dont mind if I use this to plug your YT channel and blog again! This is one of the most awesome outlooks on life's questions I've seen. I truly think anyone who thinks they have all the answers, doesnt understand the questions.

  • like your videos. really cool topics :)

  • This is Awesome!!! but I think evolution is a bunch of bunk, to a point.

  • blibbity blabbity blah blah. Now I must do something manly to make up for watching this.

  • this is like a discover show only better!

  • bullcrap.

  • Great stuff, Levi. Have you delved into the realm of evolutionary psychology or ev. biology? Check out The Moral Animal or Sperm Wars for some good readin'. Keep up the good work bud.

  • @SunshineASV @ExileOfSandThanks for responding. Yeah Im definitely not making any effort to avoid those topics. All realms are open for debate and exploration.

  • @anarchopk Thanks man, Ive actually read ishmael! Good book.

  • levi, if you haven't read it yet, i'd highly recommend reading the book Ishmael. Its probably one of my favorite books because of how its written and the subject matter. it leads the reader through a different way of thinking on how we came about and why, a way that most people don't think about. i can't go into it too much right now but all i can say is "read ishmael!" Good videos, by the way, i enjoy taking a few mins to watch these and ponder things in life.
