  • Your sparring sessions are cool but I have to think if a live or even metal blade were used, would the flail user be so aggressive in stepping into the opponent's range? Of course this is only sparring and safety is a concern but it is hard to simulate the same respect/caution given to metal edged weapons when sparring with wooden stand-ins. Similar thoughts regarding the 3 sectional vs spear sparring session.

  • would the guy with the sword act more cautious, if the flail would be made of oak with nails in it.

It´s quite hypothetic - I think, the way we practice it is the only senseful way.

What would you do different ?

  • I did not intend to offend. I agree any sparring practice is better than none and I did compliment your sparring sessions. It seemed like your school is interested in sparring with traditional weapons. I have never seen a flail with nails sticking out of it so I did not conjecture that as a possibility. I only point out the difference in using a wooden sword for those that try to use these videos to say one weapon is more effective than another.

  • Heia Gungfuboy,

all good - I didn't understand your comment as an offend.

When we use sticks and staffs for sparring it´s always rattan, as otherwise the risk of bad injury is to high.

In the European mid age, the flail was used from farmers as a battle weapon, There they used the flail made of iron or hardwood with nails in it.

    Tx for your thoughts.

  • is the end of the Flail made of wood? it must hurt like hell after a day of sparing.

  • It´s made of rattan - and yes, it leaves a permanent impression.

  • great video. It helps show how effective the farmer's flail really was. The shield was really no defense against it as it always wrapped around it.

No wonder the Czech Hussites kicked crusader ass with it.

  • 2:29 was bullshit he grabbed the sword XD props to that kid

  • I guess in your system, the legs are no bodypart that counts for hits?

  • Needs a bigger shield bucklers arent much protection vs a flail

  • Noobs

  • No it's a frisbee

  • I think that is more like a buckler/targe than a shield.

  • @DistendedPerinium No Sir, the scottish highlanders did not wear much armor with Broadsword and Targe (17th-18th Century), from were this style comes. It is not medieval "broadsword" and shield, so using too much armor is not historically correct.

  • @chouston80 You are right, normally sword and targe are used mor active, but against the long grain-flail it is better to be defensive and counter, when the flail swings away.
