It was actually a judged event. The top 3 bands get chosen at the end of the band competition and are invited to return on Friday Oct. 2nd for a showdown and then the Grand Champion is chosen.

You can see your drum major around the 30 second mark saluting the judges so yes, the section where you were recorded was the competition zone.
