Story lead: The Monongahela National Forest has five federally designated wilderness areas. These areas are closed to vehicles, road-building, logging and biking.
They are meant to be primitive areas where people go to escape modern day life. A bill before Congress would add almost 50,000 acres of wilderness to the Forest.
But not everyone thinks that wild is so wonderful. Some users of the forest don't want the limitations that come with a wilderness designation.
And the Division of Natural Resources worries a plan supported by the state's congressional delegation would interfere with wildlife management.

  • Mountain bikes can rode in many places. You can't go just anywhere and find pure wilderness.

  • I think we need to declare as many acres as possible to be protected. If not,the companies will destroy every piece of land we have. Between logging and coal..there would be nothing left. I am not against coal or logging if done right and in a reasonable manner. I dont like the surface mining but underground is how we should go. As for the logging, well,we just cant keep cutting away our forests..thousands of acres a day, without severe consequences.
