MANILA, Philippines -- Far Eastern University went to their backcourt to force a rubber match for the last Finals berth, hammering out a convincing 59-49 Final Four win over stunned Adamson Soaring Falcons Thursday in the UAAP Season 74 men's basketball at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Terrence Romeo and RR Garcia silenced a major part of the 15,374 strong crowd with their strong plays, delivering 19 and 16 points, respectively.
The rubber match that will decide on who will challenge the Ateneo Blue Eagles' four-peat bid will be played on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Big Dome.
Romeo put up 10 points in the first half to keep the no.2 seed Falcons at bay while Garcia exploded for 11 in the third canto where the no.3 seed FEU seized a 21-point advantage, 52-31, its largest in the game.
Adamson mounted a furious comeback behind the high-flying Alex Nuyles, whose nine straight points cut FEU's lead to seven, 56-49, with 3:35 left in the fourth period.
But that proved to be the Falcons' last hurrah as Nuyleswent out with a mild sprain in the dying minutes.
Romeo, last season's Rookie of the Year, sealed the Tamaraws' impressive victory with a baseline runner in the last 1:34 to push the lead back to 10, 59-49.
"Maganda ang nilaro nila Terrence (Romeo) at RR (Garcia) at yung idinepensa namin kaso medyo nag-relax nung bandang huli. Nagulat kami sa zone ng Adamson at iyon ang paghahandaan namin sa Sunday. Malay niyo, makatsamba ulit kami (Terrence (Romeo) and RR (Garcia) played great and our defense was good but we relaxed a bit in the latter part. We caught by Adamson's zone defense in the second half by surprise but we'll get ready for that on Sunday. I hope we get lucky again)," FEU coach Bert Flores said.
So dominant was FEU's defense that they limited Adamson to nine points each in the first and third quarters and forced the Falcons to shot a measly 26.6 percent from the field.
Only Nuyles managed to get into double figures with 20 points. Eric Camson scored only six, none in the first half, while their backcourt generals Lester Alvarez and Jerick Canada only made five points each.
The annual Cheerdance Competition, which is expected to draw a mammoth crowd, will be held on Saturday at 3 p.m. also at the Big Dome.
