This video was shot around fifteen years ago and probably stuck in a cabinet for many of those years. Nope, I didn't shoot it. Yep, the tape has been returned to whom it was borrowed. Yep, someone may say "Wow, its been found!" Nope, I'll have very little idea who it is. Oh yeah..., I tried to fix the audio but appeared to be making it worse.

At work, at my local airport, at my computer club, and two aviation museums where I volunteer, I've had people loan me interesting aviation material because they know I love it. The tape with this material was included in a pile of several tapes for me to caruse. The tape was unlabeled and didn't have its write-protect tab removed. As soon as I started playing the tape and realized what it contained I ejected it, popped the write-protect tab, rewound it, and started downloading it into my computer. I then checked YouTube and Google to see if there was anything like this on the web -- so far I haven't found anything! I was told a neighbor had passed it along because of their interested in aviation. Although my mother would probably disagree, I thought the tape was like finding a lost Rembrandt.

I recognized the B-25 "In The Mood" and think I've seen "Pacific Princess" somewhere along the way. The aerial scenes were shot from both "In The Mood" and a third B-25 painted in olive drab that I haven't identified yet. There will probably be some interesting comments.

Yep, two Grumman Mallards and an Albatross were also launched from the Carl Vison and will be shown in another YouTube video.

Oh the liability wavers that must have been signed to do this!

Happy Centennial Of Naval Aviation in January 2011!

  • You have spliced together about four of the day together. The landing is at Ford island when we all brought the bird over their so they could be load onto Carly V.

Shipley and Snout was from the Sat afternoon airshow right after we flew down the Beach.

  • @101Vodoo Yeah..., I tried to put together a nice video from the material (departure, tour, elements, arrival) and noticed two different spinner/cowling combinations (black/red and silver/yellow) when I was done. Oh well... The tape got misplaced, there was no contact information, my eMail queries went unanswered, and viewers have really been enjoying it.

You mention Shipley, is that as in Ed Shipley of the Horsemen? Which of the planes was he in?

  • I know the material on this tape has probably been stuck in a cabinet for many years and traded hands at least once.

Okay... Comment number one via eMail from an aviation buddy is that the "olive drab" Mitchell I didn't recognize is "Heavenly Body." He also said the Wildcat came from the CAF, the Avenger is no longer on the west coast, and the B-25 pilots did a lot of practice at Eagle Field near Dos Palos, CA -- a former Army Air Forces training field. I need to contact Barry.

    Well done!

  • I got the chance to fly on IN THE MOOD once back in 1995 and it the best ride of my life. I still remember it like it was yesterday. We flew from Rialto to El Centro, and on the way home I was sitting in the nose and we were flying so low over the farmers fields we have to go up and over telephone lines. Bill and Alan are outstanding pilots. I am proud to have worked with them as a young kid growing up and working on their collection.

  • The OD B-25 is not Heavenly Body. It's #44-30832 "Buck U'. It was owned by a friend of mine at the time this film was taken.

  • Great video !!! Been there @ Hawaii and loved it !

  • I missed this, I was on USS Constellation CV-64. Great video!!

  • I was stationed on the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) when this went on.

When the launch took place, we were in a parade of war ships from many countries including Russia, GB, Australia, France, Japan, and many others right off the Waikiki beach. There were throng of people on the beach as well.

It was in incredible week in Pearl Harbor. One I will never forget.

Thanks for posting this video!! It brings back a lot of good memories of that cruise. . .

  • This is some good footage. My dad is the owner and piolot of the In the Mood B-25. if you need any info I might be able to answer some questions just message me or email
